Increasing students’ career readiness through career guidance: measuring the impact with a validated measure

I have just published an article setting out a measure of ‘career readiness’ with Vanessa Dodd and Jill Hanson.

In the article we argue that the concept of ‘career readiness’ describes young people’s capacity and preparation to undertake their post-school career. We develop a short (nine question) measure of career readiness and argue that it can serve as a useful short-term measure of the impact of career guidance.

In the article we:

  • detail the development of the career readiness measure demonstrating that our measure is valid and reliable;
  • test the relationship between career guidance interventions and career readiness among secondary school students. We found that greater participation in career guidance activities was significantly associated with increased career readiness;
  • discuss the implications for careers practitioners, policymakers and researchers.

I’m excited that we have been able to publish this article because it provides us with a new tool for demonstrating the impact of career guidance programmes in schools. We can now test and quantify the impact of career guidance programmes using this measure. The fact that we have demonstrated that a Gatsby programme has a significant impact on young people’s career readiness also provides further support for the approach that has been taken to career education in England over the last five or so years.
